So back in July, I posted about starting to plan our Advent calendar and promised mock-ups of the four panels fairly quickly. Then I sat down to actually start mocking them up. Yeah, not nearly as easy as I thought.
When I decided to include the Nativity scene as an Advent calendar, I didn’t really think about how hard it would be to get twenty-four pieces into the scene. The twenty-four pieces doesn’t include the stable but does include the straw and manger as separate pieces. I use a free graphics program, Paint.net, which has limited pre-loaded shapes so each item is broken down into the simplest shapes possible. When it comes time to actual cut the pieces, I may try to hand draw some of the pieces. Hopefully, hand-drawn pieces will improve the look of the calendar. I plan on adding the finer details with fabric pens which will help the look of the pieces. The pieces with be stored in pockets on the border of the panel which aren’t shown in this mock-up.
I’ve started mocking up the Christmas Tree panel which should go much faster so hopefully I’ll have that by the end of the week. (Nope, not much faster. It’s hard to come up with enough good looking ornaments.) What do you think of the mock-up? Would it be your choice for a family Advent calendar? Are you waiting to see one of the other panels? Take a second to let me know what you think.
